On the occasion of the primary election, I assisted a gentleman who, like many San Francisco citizens believing themselves to have registered as independent voters, had in fact checked the box for the far-far-right American Independent Party. When Mr. Molly Antopol's latest book is The UnAmericans. But, after all, the fact that Mayor Jim Kunkel had first fired Stinger missiles into the Botanical Garden reflecting pool, massacring innocent picnickers, did require some kind of response. In Pete Robinson's seaside suburban town, things have, well, fallen into disrepair. Robinson For A Better World

They go about their lives doing all the things comfortably domesticized Americans do. I was on the couch when the election results started coming in. Otherwise the happy landmarks of our lives, too, could soon end up sinking. So today post-boo boo kissing I picked the book up for the first time in many long years, flipped around, and was chuckling again. Saw the numbers come in for North Carolina, and Georgia most expensive Senate race in the state's historythey saidand Colorado.

This is a very different beast than campaigning. The schools have been closed, education put on hold so that children can be trained in the art of jungle warfare. Well, most of it. But, after all, the fact that Mayor Jim Kunkel had first fired Stinger missiles into the Botanical Garden reflecting pool, massacring innocent picnickers, did require some kind of response. Since it's a story with far greater relevance to today's somethings than even to my thensomething self, I'm hopeful it will reinforce his sense that the morality he sees enacted around him is pathological and not emulatable.

The human moments. Is it a novel about the fragmentation of society? And so this week, as I do after almost every election, I wondered how this new crop of governors and senators and congressman would navigate the shift from the poetry of their campaigns to the prose of governing — and I thought of Mr.

In this grim and comic novel, the titular Robinson, an educator and pillar of his Florida community, narrates his descent into a madness even nastier than the one gripping his compatriots. The local school was defunded, and turned into a factory.

As a reminder, the first government shut-down was almost a year away but had already been set in motion by the politically Elect Mr. Robinson for a better world book Clintons proposing a National Health Insurance Plan that would've saved tens of thousands from death or debilitating debt.

Robinson bemoans the declining situation: "The skies blacken, moisture descends, canals rise, lawns puddle, the unswept streets slowly fill," he reports. We saw the giant maps, granular analyses of individual county results — data Elect Mr. Robinson for a better world book for the hard-core connoisseur.

But when no one is looking, he spends his time writing books about spaceships, aliens, giant robots and ray guns. They go about their lives doing all the things comfortably domesticized Americans do. Maybe I'm a bit desensitized, but I didn't find it quite so dark.

That said, allow me to concede that my brother Hiram is an incredible asshole. Amid all this bedlam, Pete Robinson, former third-grade teacher and amateur medievalist with a scale model Inquisition-era interrogation chamber in his basement, has an epiphany: he should run for mayor.

I mean, listen to this: "I have a peculiar affection for [Eugene] McCarthy. It might, however, contain the greatest number of killer lines and passages. I recall standing next to him in the snow outside the 'exit' door of a shoe factory in Manchester, New Hampshire, in February of when the five o'clock whistle blew and he had to stand there in the midst of those workers rushing out to the parking lot.

Ours was then a country of receding community ethic, a sense of a destiny shared was eroding ever-faster, and its lack of usability as a ground-cover in the garden of liberty we're supposed to be maintaining was alarming to many of us.

There might be a drainage problem the town needs to deal with, but there seem to be no existential threats to these happy, sun-drenched seaside dwellers. Initially, the book seems like just another off-kilter picaresque, but bit by bit we come to realize that something is very, very wrong with our narrator.

This is a very different beast than campaigning. Robinson for a Better World, Donald Antrim displays his talent for beautiful, brilliant and crystalline clear description. The book takes place in a staid seaide town with a relaxed attitude towards extreme violence: the local park is studded with landmines and the residents one-up each other to see who has the most elegant death-pit in their yard.

The seaside suburban community where the action of the novel takes place is a microcosm of the fear- and warmongering, the hostility, and the hysteria that was prevalent in the politics, media, and communities of this country in the early s.

I was sick of them all — the red, the blue, the losers for losing, the winners for winning, the press for being so smug and breathless. A striking literary discovery. When Mr. Robinson has his eye on a mayoral run; he gives pedantic lectures on medieval torture to rapt audiences. Taking place mostly on a ceiling, The Verificationist was probably my least favorite of the three in terms of plot a ludicrous metric for these novels, I suppose.

The local citizenry is busy surrounding their homes with moats filled with broken glass, bamboo spears and water moccasins; the school has been converted into a factory creating talismans from marine animals; and the public library's duplicate books are being used to detonate claymore mines in Turtle Pond Park.

I did not know about Donald Antrim, Well, most of it. His narrative voice isn't assured, it tries too hard to clever-clever its way out of some cul-de-sacs with limited success, but still tells a true story.

It's more of a midnight-blue, like the depths of the sea that the coelacanth--the prehistoric fish and spirit animal of Pete's wife, Meredith--traverses.Elect Mr. Robinson for a Better World: A Novel: Books - 42comusa.com Skip to main content.
